It is no secret that we are in an economic crises that is severely effecting this job market. There are low life scum sucking scavengers out there that are taking advantage and feeding off this difficult time to price very skilled pros out of work. Because the technology has become so user friendly and cheap allows these low lives to believe that anybody can do it... therefore underpay or worse not want to pay. We all know, as pros, that this work takes skill, training, hard work, time and a financial investment. And when we do accept work at these deplorable offers, which I have been guilty of out of desperation, it always seems to turn into a nightmare. I'm sure most of you have experienced this crap! Well enough is enough!!! I know its tough to turn down any work at this time but with so many of us competing for the same gig they get us by the balls until they hear the price they want which is usually less than min wage. We, as freelancers are not unionized or protected in anyway. A precedent needs to be set! Please friends, I implore you, if only for one week DO NOT ACCEPT ANY JOBS FOR UNDER 200 per day, which is really less than the rental of some equipment. If we stick to a bottom line price, maybe just maybe, some of these cheap dirt bags will get the idea. They need us! But lets not allow them to exploit us anymore. Thanks.

Didn't you know, people that apply for jobs here are enlightened beings from another dimension. We have no need for temporal things such as money, rent or other expenses. We exist just to serve you- our Creative Masters. Doing so brings us to a place of Zen and Nirvana. By accepting work for money we would be removing ourselves from our spiritual plane where we would be tainted by the imperfections of this world. The longer hours you make us work, and the worse the conditions means our souls will be cleansed all the more.

What does Stipened and Deferred mean?
Ive been working in television for 4 years now and the only term when it comes to getting paid ive ever heard is....DAY RATE.......what the hell is stipened and deferred pay??? it sounds like some sort of bull$hit term that means you aint getting paid......can somebody please explain this to me????

I can not believe that someone who has been working in tv for four years has not heard of the term deferred and I also can not believe that someone who has been working in TV for four years has to look on craigslist for a job (unless they are so awful at what they do that not even their closest friends will hire them on). Deffered means that there is no pay. Sometimes people make films and videos for fun and don't always have the budget to pay everyone, and most of the time when someone is not paying it means that they are not getting paid themselves. You are probably new to southern California and don't understand the business at all, which is fine, but get used to it. Everyone pays there dues in the beginning and if they are lucky enough, they make a career out of it.

To be honest most indy filmmakers misuse the meaning of Stipend and Deferred... The real meanings are below.
To answer your question - A stipend is a form of monetary payment or salary, such as for an internship or apprenticeship. It is often distinct from a wage or a salary because it does not necessarily represent payment for work performed, instead it represents a payment that enables somebody to be exempt partly or wholly from waged or salaried employment in order to undertake a role that is normally unpaid, (e.g. a magistrate in England), or voluntary, or which cannot be measured in terms of a task (e.g. members of the clergy).
Stipends are usually lower than what would be expected as a permanent salary for similar work. This is because the stipend is complemented by other benefits such as accreditation, instruction, food and/ or accommodation. Deferred compensation is an arrangement in which a portion of an employee's income is paid out at a date after which that income is actually earned. Dont be a slave - Internships must be paid

I called the labor board to confirm. All interns must be paid at least minimum wage unless the employer has a signed agreement with an accredited college or university and the internship counts directly toward course credit. If anyone is offering an unpaid internship - flag them down. Legit internships get filled through schools. Dont let the cheap bastards take advantage of you.

Now, how about you add a few hundred more on top of that for the use of my equipment, my talent, my skills, my experience, and my education in photography? Not to mention, you have NO idea how long a proper shoot actually takes. Depending on what/who is being shot, just setting up LIGHTING can take well over an hour, much less adding in getting the best composition.
what exactly makes you think that "kicking" a photographer 50 bucks to make your website look good is such a great offer?

PA nation: Please STOP WORKING UNPAID GIGS for strangers. It upsets the job market and decreases the likelihood that deadbeat companies will ever offer paid PA work.
Truth is they don’t NEEDs PAs. PAs are a luxury. If a company cannot afford to pay their PAs they are un-professional or have priority issuses, an ego and likely will not provide good training or experience. In fact often these companies will teach you bad habits or the wrong way because the producers are not experienced enough to teach you anything but what not to do.
If you want experience don’t work these free gigs- produce your own stuff. You’ll learn so much more and become better than any of these jokers who won't roll up thier sleaves and have to rely on other people to do thier dirty work.
