Free Music for Film?

Date: 2009-10-07, 11:39PM PDT

We spent lots and lots of money making a ton of episodes for a project, hiring all sorts of positions like directors and editors and directors of photography and costume designers and actors.

We feel really proud of our near-final product.

Now we need to put some music in, but we're not going to even think about paying anyone anything for it. We figure we might as well just give up on that, because music is free. Laaa!! See? Plus, if we can rape a few budding composers, we're sure to get the product we want, right? LOTS of films have been released that pay composers zero dollars, right? It's not a technical position that requires specialized knowledge of equipment or techniques, right? I've seen people playing the piano in old-time movie houses, like when people are tied on the train tracks and they play all those scary chords when that handlebar moustache dude in the cape is acting all suspicious. That's all there is to it, right?

So anyway, we'll be sure to include your name on our project and put you in the IMDB and give you a copy. Because a project that pays no money to its composer is sure to go places! You'll be a STAH!!

Seriously, though, no money. NOTHIN'.

The worst part about posting that joke gig?

The responses I got from a few composers who were genuinely interested in applying for the job.

Oy.

Shame on you. You deserve more than "nothing," buddy!

My kingdom for a composer's union!
