Thank you to the decent people.

Date: 2011-12-10, 9:02PM PST

I know a lot of people on here are shooting for the webisodes/shorts/music videos, and tend to not have a lot to throw around. So I want to say thanks to the people that actually pay PAs and other crew, and actually care about being a good producer. I worked for plenty of people on here, that have done some real low budget stuff. And while all of them have never been able to pay a great daily wage, they've worked hard to make sure that everyone got payed a fair wage. So while I'll never get rich working for you guys, you did help me keep my head above water during a tough holiday season.

Also FYI people. Whenever you see NatGeo post on here, get on that. They pay a great day rate, and are awesome to work for.

Re: Cinematographer

Date: 2011-12-07, 6:28PM PST

YOUNG seems to be the new code word for FREE....sometimes the carpetbaggers use the word "STUDENT" to describe who they "want," but in the next breath they ask for specialized experience - go figure.
This particular ad also demands specific photography equipment - for Free....who do the think pays for it and maintains it (not for Free).

Young people, students, professionals, veterans, women, gays, whites, blacks, latinos, asians and everyone else, unite and stop being taken advantage of!

I try hard not to answer these ads from the bush league wannabes who are dumbing down the biz (even more).

But if I do, I just explain that I will work for free...but only on a student project (at a legit college or high school) where the kid is maybe a junior or senior 21 years old or younger.

I explain that I will not work for a 25, 30, 40, 50+ year old for free...period! No matter what the promises: "awesome script," "awesome crew," "awesome future paid jobs," "awesome good food,"....etc.

---------------------------------------

Date: 2011-12-08, 12:34PM PST

I would have to concur with my comrade here, I've done enough free shoots as a student, some even for celebrities who have money. Usually, when the project gets picked up you and all your hard work and effort are forgotten and they hire their "Go To People," friends, family, and whoever. Why? Because your labor is not valued, they're dozens lining up to do this. So, now that I'm a professional I find it very offensive and disrespectful to the art, discipline and individual especially in this economy. You wouldn't ask a Mechanic to fix your car for free, or a plumber to fix your pipes for free. Why is it then acceptable to ask YOUNG or any one to work for free and provide the use of their personal property?. It is plain and simple exploitation of individual's labor, dreams, and desperation to "Make It." It is basically slavery when one DOES NOT compensate someone else for their time, labor, and equipment. Maybe if the project is so "AWESOME" then you should do like other business owners and take out a loan or fund raise to back up your claims. I too, back a moratorium on this shameful behavior to ask for "Free Work", flag them and get them out of here, if this continues these people will lower the standards so much that none of us well be able to eat.
In fact, now I'm to the point where I will not even consider working on any project or any producer/director who uses the word "AWESOME!"

I've heard of some seasoned photographers who actually accept a free or disrespectfully low paying gig and just don't show up for the shoot...leaving these carpetbaggers scrambling to fill the crew position and pay a decent rate at the last moment.

I've heard of others who say, "sure, I'll work for free - but you have to pay market rate for my gear - camera package, lights, grip, etc - which rents for $700+/day.

I know it's not our job to teach these clowns what their parents failed to, like the basic Golden Rule...but I would like to hear from you:

re: TV reality series looking for crew members / Camera operators

Date: 2011-11-12, 11:24PM PST

DO NOT WORK FOR FREE!!!!!!!!! Any "producer" worth anything should know they need to have a budget in place, even for a pilot. If they can't scrape together enough money to shoot a pilot do you really think they have the means to get you paying work? They state the show will not pay its crew members at this time. How about down the road? Will it pay then? If so, what does it pay? If the show gets picked up you have ZERO guarantee of being hired for the production. Real companies pay crew members, even for pilots.

Original, dumb, stupid, mindless, sleazy post:

Reality show looking for crew members. The first shoot will be in downtown LA on Friday November 18th. . The show will not pay its crew members at this time as this is the pilot shoot. however this will be a great oportunity for exposure in the industry and there could be a possibiity of the producers hiring in future. Question: If it's in "gigs" doesn't that mean $

Date: 2011-11-10, 10:14AM PST

So, last year I made a living from decent "gigs" as a DP on Craigslist. It seemed there was an appropriate pay scale for many jobs. Not so this year. FYI I tend to work for around $50-75/hr. I will not put the equipment in the car for less than $250. As far as I know this is an appropriate pay rate and fits roughly in with the union average.

My question for you DPs is: should we just flag all these adds that are basically offering DPs the opportunity to work all day for free or for some bullshit like IMDB credit?

Shouldn't these free requests be made in community?

Amateur job titles to avoid

Date: 2011-10-21, 3:09PM PDT

As a service to the clueless masses here's a guide to what positions on set are called, as many of the people offering jobs clearly have never been on set.

Camera Department has a DP (director of photography), Camera Operator, 1st AC, 2nd AC, and Loader

The following terms make you look like an obvious film school undergrad who has no clue what theyre doing:
"Camera Guy"
"Shooter" (my personal favorite)
"Camera Op with own equipment"
"PA that can pull focus"

Sound Department on set has a Sound Mixer, a Boom Operator, and a Utility

The following terms make you look like you watched a David Lynch movie in high school and decided to "become an artist" with no formal education
"Sound Operator"
"Audio...anything"
"Sound Engineer" (when you want a mixer)
"Sound Guy/Man"
"Boom Guy"
"Boom Op with equipment" (Thats a mixer, people)
"PA who is familiar with sound"

Also...anything involving a backslash is just pathetic:

AD/Line Producer
DP/AC
Sound Mixer/Caterer

Thank you for your time, and remember, if you have no idea what youre doing, at least use vocabulary that makes it look like you do.

Intern Defined

Date: 2011-10-07, 7:17PM PDT

Internship is a system of on-the-job training for white-collar jobs, similar to an apprenticeship. Interns are usually college or university students, but they can also be high school students or post graduate adults seeking skills for a new career. They may also be as young as middle school or in some cases elementary students. (PLEASE NOTE THIS): Student internships provide opportunities for students to gain experience in their field(NOT BE SKILLED AT MANY THINGS LIKE MOST BOZOS WHO WANT INTERNS DEMAND) determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, or gain school credit. Internships provide employers with cheap or free labor for (typically) low-level tasks. Some interns find permanent, paid employment with the companies in which they interned. Their value to the company may be increased by the fact that they need little to no training.

An internship may be either paid, unpaid or partially paid (in the form of a stipend). Paid internships are most common in the medical, architecture, science, engineering, law, business (especially accounting and finance), technology and advertising fields. Internships in non-profit organizations such as charities and think tanks are often unpaid, volunteer positions. Internships may be part-time or full-time - typically they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer. They usually last 6--12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the company involved. The act of job shadowing may also constitute interning.

Internship positions are available from businesses, government departments, non-profit groups and organizations. Due to strict labour laws, European internships are mostly unpaid, although they are still popular among non-Europeans in order to gain international exposure on one's résumé and for foreign language improvement.

Date: 2011-09-21, 8:05PM PDT

People keep on forgetting that their freebie jobs, labor, and equipment should be posed in Craigslist > Community > Volunteers

Everyone here thinks they're going to make it big, "great opportunity" is going to take you 5-10yrs to fulfill. That doesn't put bacon on the table. '

If you have so much faith in your skills to put my well-being on the line. Why not put your life on the line and take out a loan? "oh cause, what if it doesn't do well?" "I don't want to spend that much money for a flop" ....we don't want to waste our time, sweat, blood, and our investments on a flop either.

And for those who thinks deferred pay = pay, even though you don't have distribution already lined up . . . you're retarded. No one is going to make a cent without that in place.

videographer

Date: 2011-08-28, 9:30PM PDT

times are hard guys, i know this in the wrong section but times are hard. I hope you understand that times are hard.

I am a professional videographer shooting on a gopro video camera. I have perfected a technique where I attach the camera to my head, and can use my body to do hollywood level crane and steadicam shots. Because of this, I can save your production money, as there will literally be no actual costs.... in fact, I will pay you to hire me. I will pay you to hire me because I know that your concept is ahead of its time, and there are hundreds of people who will back it once they see it paired with my wonderfully artistic upside down standing cart wheel merry go round posterized signature shot.... there will be a little bit of shake, but that is okay, because in imovie there is this effect called stabilizer and it makes everything smooth! Actually I have just upgraded to final cut pro x, and it also has this feature... but better, because its called final cut pro. This is what you get when you hire me - cutting edge technology, and forward thinking.... industry level knowledge.

Is your project in seattle? No problem, I have a car I will drive there, because I believe in you that much. What? You don't have a car? That is okay, I will drive you there... in fact, put the actors in the back seat, I just had this idea - I can put the gopro backwards on my head, and shoot a scene and buy you coffee and give you a handjob all at the same time as we drive. Innovation. Wait, what?! Your project is a web commercial for your laundromat in seattle and you want to bluescreen it? OMG, it has always been my dream to shoot laundromat web commercials, imagine the experience I will accumulate. This is so much better than staying home, and writing my own script or spec commercial and shooting it. OMFG breakfast, dinner, lunch.... PIZZA? I FUCKING LOVE PIZZA!!!!

Crazy Low Rates for DPs

Date: 2011-08-24, 6:03PM PDT

I know times are tough, but when you offer a DP, even a new kid with a camera, $30 or $50 to shoot your video, even for a few hours, you are proving to be an ignorant douche.

You cannot rent any camera for that, which is why you offer that rate in the firstplace, and you are shocked when you are flagged down repeatedly.

Shoot your lame shit on your iPhone, and spend the $50 on yourself... an hour of therapy to find out why you are a dick.

Offer at least $100-150 for a green shooter for a few hours, 2-3 bills for a day, and expect anyone with credits to be at least 3-500+ per day, every day, any day. And guess what ? those are the REAL rates people DO get paid on indie work in L.A. today.

Wise up, wise asses.

I have an Idea

Date: 2011-08-19, 11:24PM PDT

So since no one wants to pay people to work... I think we should just respond to the jobs and just not show up or do a really half assed job.... Maybe then they will learn that in order to get reliable as well as talented people to work for them .... they should pay. I mean what do I have to lose? Money? Nope! A great contact? Why would I want to stay in contact with someone that can't pay? so no loss there either... These guys always complain about how someone flaked on them so they need someone ASAP to replace them but sorry NO PAY. Maybe if you start paying people to work you will find more reliable/talented people will apply.... just a thought...

I am looking for a professional camera man or woman who is willing to shoot in a hypertensive atmosphere. There is no pay, but the person will be credited under crew when the projects are finished and if the camera operating is done well, jobs with pay will follow. I need someone who has studied cinematography in some form, even if you are self taught, please do not think you are professional if you have made a couple of films with a low standard camcorder, at least be familiar with professional video cameras, for example a sony hdr fx-1000. Terminology is important in this business so hopefully you know what aperture, gain, and focus do to a sequence in a film or series. Copy, credit, meals don't pay my student loans, my car insurance (oh right, all PAs have to have cars too, remember?!), or my rent.

Stop insulting us - we spend years working for little and going to school - our time is worth money, just like anybody else's is.

Location: not on your set
Compensation: No pay, but copy, meals and credit are just as good as money, RIGHT?!

ENOUGH ALREADY

Date: 2011-08-06, 6:47PM PDT

My last post was deleted, but thank you to those who replied. Basically, everyone needs to get educated on how the system works. Know your rights, if they offer less than $112/day, than they don't have the money to make anything of quality anyway. So in the experience you think you are gaining, you are actually gaining bad experience, with improper tools to do the job, which in turn, hurts your reputation. Too many people are pretending to be producers, and they don't know what they are doing. They would never ask the bagger at the grocery store to work for less than he already makes, but if the bagger made less, groceries would be cheaper, which in turn saves him money and allows him to get more bang for his buck. THEY ARE TREATING YOU LIKE PEASANT, UNSKILLED LABORERS, BUT THEY WANT YOU TO MAKE THEM RICH!!!! You wouldn't go and ask the janitor making $9 dollars and hour to work on your movie, even though he's strong, moves furniture all the time, can clean, and has an attention to detail. BUT THEY WILL ASK A SKILLED PERSON IN A POSITION THAT NOT EVERYONE CAN DO, TO WORK FOR UNPAID OVERTIME AND AT A RATE THE SAME AS THE JANITOR. WHO IS WINNING HERE!!!!!!???????

In so, in attempts to not be flagged again, I am seeking a Producer. It's a really great script, the crew is wonderful, fresh new minds. I think we really have a good chance of theatrical distribution. It's no pay now, but when we see a profit we will give you a deferred pay, but it depends on your experience. I'm going to need a resume, and some references. Also, you have to be Bi-lingual, and drive a really nice car, because we don't want to rent one to drive our A-List talent back to the airport. Also, can you stay late tonight, we are really looking for team players.
This will be a great networking opportunity though! Happy Hunting, but we will consider students if you have experience and can get credit.

This message should jump out to you and say something immediately. It's no pay now, but "IF" we see a profit, we will share some. That's saying "IF" we don't suck at our job and mess this up, I MIGHT GET RICH!!!!

RE: Enough (Hollywood)

Date: 2011-08-06, 7:11PM PDT

The problem is more insidious than you think. It's not only the inexperienced that offer lo to no pay. Experienced and successful producers are now offering little or no pay for many production positions. Why? Because they can get away with it. We have all undercut each other trying to make something instead of nothing in order to stay afloat in the recession. They got quality work for $150, then $100, then $75....$50....and now they ask for the same work for no pay. Unfortunately, the "producers" are bad with math. It's the same kind of exploitation math that created this recession by restructuring out experienced employees and hiring inexperienced people at 1/3 the cost. With this kind of math, they leave people with no money to support themselves, which also means no money to spend on entertainment or anything else. Businesses close. We all lose.
You are absolutely right that it needs to STOP.

Future Compensation....

Date: 2011-08-05, 5:33PM PDT

Seems like a decent day for the rants so why not one more!?! Those looking for work, especially you younger/student types, please stop believing in "future work/compensation" or the "no pay now, but definitely on other projects" Sorry, that NEVER happens. I been doing this for 8 years now and if they don't pay for "this one" trust me, you won't be seeing a dime on the next project and that's if they even remember your name after the project is done... I'm not saying it's impossible or never happens but 99 percent of the time, you won't see any money, back-end or otherwise.

And the other poster is right....Copy, Credit, Meals is TRULY insulting. AND I'm getting sick of people thinking that CL is not a "real way" to get a job or work, that this website is only made for those that need "experience." Bull - I get a solid amount of work from CL but at the same time, I only take PAID work.

Trust me, the sooner people stop taking on freebie jobs, the sooner they will realize, paying for a TALENT is actually the right thing to do.

my 5 cents (which is more than some of these so called "productions" want to pay you for your time, talent, and gear!)

Re: Young DP Wanted

Date: 2011-08-05, 4:57PM PDT

Am I the only one continually offended by these ads? Why don't you just ask for the moon to be delivered on a silver platter to your doorstep. You want someone with no experience BUT somehow has a camera package and G & E package and reel. Two things strike me about this; you must not care what your project turns out looking like and you're just interested in the equipment, the DP is secondary, which leads back to the first point, you don't want you project to look good. Oh yeah, all for no pay!

I'm sick of this! I've been in the industry for over ten years and these practices are KILLING the industry. You want a decent looking show, hire someone based on their reel, pay them a decent rate and rent some equipment. If you have a "passion"/no money project, shoot it yourself, cameras are cheap. No one will be as passionate about your project as you.

And one last thing: PLEASE stop offering "Copy, Credit and Meals" as payment. It's an insult. These do not pay the rent or even buy a stick of gum.

Young DP Wanted

We are currently seeking a DP for a no-budget TV Pilot Sizzle shoot the last weekend in August. Our ideal DP would have a good understanding of shooting styles commonly used within the comedy genre.

You must have your own camera, and preferably your own lighting gear. We are open to different cameras, but the shoot will be mostly handheld, so we're definitely looking for a DP that's comfortable with that.

If this is you, please respond to this email with your estimated availability in mid-late August and a link to your reel.

Thank you.

Reason forJobs being flagged

Date: 2011-05-11, 7:48PM PDT

Well .. people have been absolutley [sic] stumped on why their posts have been getting flagged. personally I do not flag, I just skip them if they are ridiculous. However, This is just a hunch but... I have a feeling (if you havent figured out by now) that people are really sick of not being paid for the work that they do. This is not a hobby for the people you are seeking to help you with your project. Its a career... their income! The fact that you have a project that you "care about so much" but are unwilling to pay the people that it takes to make it happen is very unreasonable!. in fact its down right selfish! If you want to make a movie, short film, commercial, photoshoot, happen. I suggest you do your homework and learn what it takes to be successful in this industry. chicken parmesan and a fun experience DONT PAY THE BILLS. I do not care if it is a student film. I know for a fact that you have a budget. You pay an average of $30,000 to go to AFI (which I have worked on even 1st year films and have gotten paid) etc, yet its funny how some student films can pay but others cant....... Ive done film professionally for 6 years and I am %100 percent positive that you have the money to pay you just find some departments not that important. people are not buying it anymore. sorry.

Flag all offers below minimum wage

I think its time to put a stop to the slave labor producers think they can get away with based on "opportunity".
There is plenty of opportunity in LA, and producers can get free help will continue to seek free help if we let them.
Basically, this is driving down all the rates that were decent about 3-4 years ago.
If you want to be paid more, you have to stand firm. Dont think that deferred pay will pay out, because 99% of the time, it doesnt.
Low budget is becoming an excuse. It makes me sick to be told low budget and them walk on set with three red packages...

RE: Crew for director reel: 1st AC, Grip, Boom, PAs

Date: 2011-01-18, 2:40AM PST

*AHEM* So waitasecond, you want a buncha people to come out and bust their tushies so you can hope to get a slick little "action reel" piece to land you some industry work? And you DON'T PLAN ON PAYING these people?! Seriously, what are they gonna get out of it -- it's a director's reel, fool! Yeah, it's hard times for everybody right now but for jeezas sake, have a conscience, friendo. None of these people you want for the project will get anything out of working on a showpiece for your work -- it's a dead end project for everybody but you and the actors. For reals. You can go and tell that, homeboy.

Original post:

Great opportunity to work with an experienced director on a short ACTION SCENE teaser for Director's reel.

One evening shoot Sat 1/22/11 from 7pm to 1am, to be shot in Santa Clarita. No pay on this particular shoot; however this shoot will be the demo for future actor‚s reel shoots that will be paying projects. This will be a great opportunity to gain experience and earn a credit with a valid job title that might help you get add‚l work.

1ST ASSISTANT CAMERA (1ST AC) - Responsible for setting up camera, lenses & filters and pulling camera focus as it is shooting.

PRODUCTION SOUND MIXER / BOOM OP - Responsible for recording all sound during filming (equipment provided by the producers.)

KEY GRIP - Help set up location as needed; in charge of operating the camera dollies and camera cranes.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS (PAs) - Two production assistants needed. If you don‚t have the specific skills described in the key crew positions but want to learn some or all of these, being a PA is the way to go. You will be exposed to all aspects of the production process.

No pay. Credit and copy will be provided to all cast and crew.

Unpaid crew wanted

Date: 2011-01-14, 4:01PM PST

Hi. I have no money and an unfinished script. I would like to waste the time of talented actors and crew like you by asking you to spend 8-12 hours with me and my friends trying to make a video that maybe we'll put on YouTube or enter into a film festival or something. There's no money now, of course, but maybe we'll get lucky and maybe someone will give us money later and maybe if we're in the mood we'll share it with you.

Also we might hire you for stuff later if you're cool and easygoing.

Of course you need to have experience and thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Also if you don't have a reel showing stuff that's been on network TV don't bother applying.

I'll tell you more once you apply and then I'll send you to a cool website that me and my friends set up so you can fill out our cool online questionnaire and waste more of your time. Then we'll probably interview you or something at a Starbucks maybe if we feel like it.

Don't worry about reading the script; I can assure you it's way cool. Also we have an A-list star lined up that I sat next to on a plane once that said he might be interested in doing something with me once I told him how cool this project is so we'll definitely get into Sundance and probably get distribution after that.

Let the bidding wars begin!

Also let us know if you can cook or something and it would be great if we could all chip in and bring snacks and stuff. The script is mine, of course, and I won't be changing a word of it never but this will definitely be a group effort.

copy credit meals waste of your time

Re: anonymous

If you post here looking for crew, and you operate a legitimate production company, you should be willing to disclose your name and the name of your production company and provide a link (imdb or website). Do you expect someone to tell you in a cover letter how much they would love to work for you or your company when they have no idea who you or your company are? I would never submit names of references to anyone who wishes to remain anonymous. Unfortunately, many "producers" and "production companies" that post on craigslist refuse to disclose who they are. This is unprofessional. Period.
