To all of you "haters" who hate crew members so much that you're unwilling to pay a livable wage for the jobs you list, good by.
You're not wanted here, you're not needed here, go offer your exploitation elsewhere.
It is illegal to hire someone to work at a job without paying them.
It is illegal to call a job an "internship" in order to avoid paying the state and federal minimum wages.
It is illegal to pay someone with "credit, copy, and meals".
Not only are all of the above illegal, they are also immoral and insulting to the people who actually do the work that you bottom feeders can't do.
A gig is a short term JOB, not an opportunity for you immoral fuckheads to get out of paying people to work on on crappy little personal projects. If you can't afford to pay your crew, go out and get yourself a job and earn the money to do so.

To Producers
Date: 2009-12-19, 1:34AM PST
To low paid or no paid producers.
We as crew expect the following:
1. pay us at least a decent rate; nothing less then $200.00 a day + overtime, mileage or fuel costs
2. pay for equipment and kit rentals and don't expect them to be dirt cheap, but about 15% to 25% less then Wooden Nickel or Indy Rentals rates + expendables & supplies; we also expect you to insure our equipment so do one of two things 1) buy your own policy from an Insurance Broker or 2) hire a producer/production company to produce your project on your behalf cause I've seen to many low budget projects get shut down by the police for not having the proper permits
3. feed us well; with a meal 30 min prior to call and a lunch + an additional meal if we run over the normal 12 hours
4. provide healthy craft service food
5. minimum of a 10 hour turnaround
Beyond being artists we freelance crew members all run our own business and we expect to be treated as any normal business. You don't goto to an In and Out and ask them to lower there prices because you cant afford a doubledouble, so we expect the same treatment.
A happy crew is a good crew.
If you have a no/low paid project, please do us all a favor post your volunteer or no paid projects in the volunteer/nonprofit section cause me and my crew will be watching and flagging.

Fun?
Date: 2009-12-15, 9:29AM PST
Why do all the folks who think that crew members should work for free advertise their projects as "fun" or "great crew to work with"?
First off, how is working for free on someone else's commercial project fun?
And since you're advertising for crew members, how in the world do you already know that you're gonna have a "great crew" around you?
You haven't hired em yet genius, they might be the worst group of people assembled since the Manson family or the last Bush adminstration.
I work for a living, I enjoy my work, I have fun at my job, I also get paid for what I do which allows me to have even more fun by being able to pay my bills and support a family. Having a lot of laughs hanging out on a set filled with people who haven't yet realized that working for free devalues themselves isn't my idea of a fun time.
And that whole copy, credit, meals thing, those things are or should be given to people who get paid for their work, not in place of payment.
Boasting about feeding me isn't going to impress me and sending me a copy of what will inevitably end up being a piece of crap personal film doesn't pay my mortgage and besides, you should be doing those things on top of paying for your workers.
And on a personal note, not one of the various low budget producer types that begged people to work for free or at a ridiculously low day rate has EVER sent me a copy of the final project. And as for "credit" why in gods name would I want my name associated with the kind of stuff that is being produced by these bottom feeders?

Well it didn't take too long for the bottom feeders to flag it off, and that's ok, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Thanks for all the good comments via email.
Remember, people who think it's perfectly acceptable to pay nothing for using the talents of others to make a buck are not your friends.
For those of you new to the Hollywood game, remember this too, there won't ever be "next time we'll pay you" jobs, the liars who tell you that will simply move on to the next gullible person who thinks that working for free will help themselves, it doesn't, it hurts you and it hurts others in your field who may have spent thousands of their own dollars and years of their lives learning their craft. When you work for free you're telling the world that you're worthless.
Is that really how you think of yourself? Making films and television shows is a business, not a hobby.
Are there people creating beautiful pieces of art using the process? Absolutely and they're all getting paid to do so.
If you simply have to work for free, find a real charity and donate your time, you'll feel better about yourself and you'll be helping people in actual need, not bottom feeders who call themselves "producers".
Happy Holidays.

THE ISSUES
=========================
Working for free is not the issue here.
Yeah, we all work for free on occasion. You can make valuable connections, potentially get paid future work, etc.
I help my friends out all the time. The problem is these blood-thirsty, predatory producers stalking CL for fresh meat.
I have been RUTHLESSLY exploited by such people in the past, and for what?
These "shorts" and "dorito's commercials" are useless to us. Most of the shorts, and none of the music videos and commercials even make it onto IMDB so the credit is worthless. Rarely do you ever see a copy. And I know the fundees out there don't mind spending days of their free time for a couple of slices of Little Caesar's but the rest of us are desperately scraping by on the few gigs we can muster every month.
Now let's talk about the "fun" aspect. Though producers will never understand it as they don't come within arm's length of real work, gripping for a 12 hour unpaid day is in no way "fun". Rewarding, yes. But lugging sandbags and c-stands up and down a hill is labor, WORK not play, plain and simple. The same is true for other departments.
And they want to use your gear for free? Do you know how much that stuff is worth? How much people paid for it? If these guys really can't afford $100 a day do you think they'll reimburse you if something gets broken? They won't, I learned that the hard way. And something is GOING to get broken when they're taking every tom dick and inexperienced rich kid willing to work for sheer <3 of "art".
The same goes for makeup artist's kit fees. They live and die by their expensive makeup kits and these cheapskates expect MUA's to not only donate their time but their expensive property toward some dubious passion project?! It's outrageous.
As for these internships, why will a company ever start paying someone when they can get people to work for free? A friend of mine worked for MTV and at the end of her 6 month internship they didn't hire a single one of the 20 interns but instead got a new batch.
The real bottom feeders, the ones you'll see on here occasionally, are even worse. They will abuse you until you quit, and then you've not only wasted your time but haven't got so much as a recommendation out of it.
These are the issues I see at play, and why I flag the living hell out of anything that doesn't pay a decent wage.

Dp Gaffer Grips Electrics
Date: 2009-12-12, 4:53PM PST
The low budget market is DEAD, no-one buys these films(videos) and they are getting cheaper and cheaper to make on average 20K and less. So where is there any money for us. Only the director or producer skims off the top to survive, they are okay as they make there projects, their rent is paid, their food and utilities are paid, and the people like Panasonic /Sony and Red who sells these cameras by the thousands are okay, they arnt hurting, it's you and me. Every director in town owns their own camera now. Cant even make a few bones renting anymore, because video is so easy, every one in town is a DP and a Gaffer. Not like the old days had to work up to these positions, thus creating work for everyone, now everyone is a DP and a Gaffer and you cannot find a good BB or AC to save your life. Hey yeah, Im going to hire an AC who has a DP resume or a BB who has a DP resume with all the cameras and lights that daddy bought and they live at home. People like Birns and a few others are GIVING away Redcams just to make a few bucks on the accessories.
Its time to take a stand against these lowbudget bloodsuckers. Flag EVERY and I mean every NON Paying job right off the bat, as soon as it comes up, flag it, let these people find the money to pay and if they cant afford it get the outa the business.
My two pennies for what it is worth.

I hate to rant in this section, but I know you job seekers are feeling me here.
NYC is paying production assistants 150 dollars a day + a per diem for expenses
to work on MUSIC VIDEOS, LOW BUDGET FEATURES, & COMMERCIALS.
Boom operators make around 150 as well,
sound mixers with equipment get about 350 a day,
& the higher you climb the greener the leaves.
That's right, the guy or gal with the CREW raincoat on directing pedestrian traffic
around Union Square during a shoot is not eating dick to support his kids.
Nobody buys short films. In fact, nobody really watches them either.
The festival circuit? Laughable. Start offering money, even deferred, & we'll start working for you.
Because yes, Obama did promote volunteerism, but he also extended unemployment benefits.
I've got all the time in the world to wait for a real job to get posted.

he wasn't talking about us volunteering to work on your music video, short film, feature film, spec TV pilot, commercial or any variations thereof. We cannot afford to work for you for free. Minimum wage in this state is 8 dollars an hour. After 8 hours it goes up to time and a half up to twelve and double time after that. These are not union agreemeents.. They are state labor laws that apply to everybody, regardless of your union status or size of your budget. If you cannot meet these simple rules then you need to go back to the trough and get some more money before you start running these ads. Stop trying to get around the laws and exploit people. It's not good for your karma and could get you into serious legal troubles if somebody decides to drop a dime on you.

Question for all RED project seekeers.
Date: 2009-11-21, 8:49PM PST
What compels so many people who have no/almost no budget that their project needs/deserves the Red Cam and prime lenses? If this was pre-red would they have been asking for 35mm? What about HPX-170's? EX-1 or 3? Or, god forbid, an HVX-200A HD P2 camcorder? It truly escapes me. They have no money to pay anyone, yet they seem to be able to afford the Red rental ($50-80k cost for full RED setup/lenses) . And all of these projects have very successful people attached or working on them, yet no $$$ for anyone. Do these people realize the quality of the other cameras or is it just to be able to talk about the project meriting Red technology? And what about post production using the RED workflow. Are you able to find people who actually do this for nothing? Not ripping on anyone, looking for answers really, its truly amazing if this is possible. Make a movie on RED with no money. Its a complete head scratcher to me. Completely.
Compensation: work with famous people, eat and get a dvd. i guess this is all to it?

RE: Question for all RED project seekeers.
Date: 2009-11-21, 10:20PM PST
I completely agree!
I’m tired of seeing producers and directors on here asking for the RED. Ask any cinematographer that’s used one. The RED is crap! It over heats, it does not respond well to low lighting, and its colors and contrast is off. Hire a DP, tell them your project and budget and have them recommend a camera that’s best for your film. Your low-budget,short,indy film isn’t going to be any better shot on an over hyped camera. It’s all about the story you tell.

Re: Question for all RED project seekers.
Date: 2009-11-21, 10:50PM PST
I too agree.
If your project isn't destined for theatrical distribution on the big screen, then there's no need for 4k resolution or Red's raw format.
Even many mainstream big budget films are shot 1080p, not 4k (e.g. Public Enemies, 2012, Avatar, etc.).
I've seen projects destined for the internet shot on a Red!
I dare say an EX1 with a 35mm adapter looks slightly better than a Red to my eye.

re: Question for all RED seekers (Hollywood)
Date: 2009-11-21, 11:14PM PST
The RED is a great camera, with a few limitations. When used within its parameters, it can create beautiful images. That being said, it is one tool amidst many others that should be used when and if it fits the story, creative vision, and, obviously, the budget. Most new film makers want to shoot on RED because they hear that they can get them cheap, and that they will look as good as film, since their movie will go theatrical. The truth is that the RED isn't cheap (over $60k for a shootable package), it doesn't have the latitude and feel of film, and , most importantly, the odds are very much against their first (second, or third) film going theatrical. If they would just approach things realistically, they can shoot on virtually any of the amazing HD cameras that can be had for under $10,000 (Sony EX3 1080p Cinealta, as example), at a price point that makes sense for their budget and the rental of the gear (anywhere from $200 to $400 per day, complete package). With the addition of a 35mm lens adaptor, I would bet money that a well lit scene shot on an EX3 and a well lit scene shot on RED would be indistinguishable to the human eye. It's great to dream big... that is what Hollywood is all about. But at some point, you have to fit your dream into your fiscal reality and make the best of it.

I have just worked on a series of commercials (national campaign) for a big chain store.
Their budget was HUGE. All the toys (Skorpio heads, Musco trucks, Russian camera car !
They used 5 cameras at the same time. Did they use the RED?
Of course not, they used the Panasonic HPX3000 !!!
I really think its funny when producers and directors wants to use the Red, just because they heard somewhere that its the "best" camera around.

To All DPs & Cinematographers
Date: 2009-11-16, 8:40PM PST
If anyone is offered a feature to shoot beginning in December for NO PAY or Deferred Pay Please tell the producers that Shooting a Motion Picture is an Artform, and a PAYED job.
Please Stop bringing down quality of life and quality of production by allowing producers to run rampant on gigs where they want you to shoot for free.
The reason they want you for free is because they had another sucker shoot their last film for free, and they learned their lesson. There are no contacts to be made, no relationship to be built. These bloodsucking leeches are looking to live off of YOUR BLOOD, YOUR SWEAT, YOUR TEARS, and YOUR IMAGINATION.
Tell them to try and shoot it themselves if its such an honor to be involved in a no-budget production. Then they can add another credit to their Lousy Bloodsucking Resumee. No one will be able to watch the film, but that doesn't matter because it was FREE.
Location: Los Angeles
Compensation: Blood Money

Re: Deferred Gigs (from LA Producer List)
Dear LAProds-
First, if you wish to respond to Todd's posting, requesting for recommendations for camera and audio for his doc in Bali, please do it off group. Secondly, I realize that I am hard on those who post for deferred payment projects and there is good reason. Because, I too have, back in the day, had been one of those who was intimately involved with them and can attest from experience that nothing good came of them.
Although involved in a creative capacity, and at the time, unaware of the business handling's of the producers, I was still involved and people who trusted me, were hurt
It left a bad taste in people's mouth and the trust I had worked hard to build, was marred. For some, to the point of being irreparable. Since I am one who never misses an opportunity to draw historical correlations to Hitler during the Wiemar Republic, my involvement was not unlike a member of the SS who found themselves on the wrong side of things declaring: "Well, how was I to know?"
While I did not know everything that was going on, I was no less guilty than those who I associated with. And much like the ex-smoker who fervently proselytizes against smoking when the occasion arises....
In the film: *The War Room*, James Carville, said that "Other than time, the most precious thing we can offer someone is our labor." When we are involved with projects that are dear to us, our judgement
becomes clouded. Particularly as we evade the facts that there is a lack of financing and substitute it with romantic superlatives, higher moral hyperbole and the all too prevailing stream of nonsense that promises our project is good for the career of those we are abusing.
Whether it is the thrill of being creative or simply pure unadulterated ego, the potential for a disconnect from those around us, to be present is always lurking. This disconnect fabricates the base justification of using someone's time and labor to benefit
ourselves without penality of moral repercussions. Sure, we justify it is for a 'good cause', for the benefit of all-mankind. Sure, we intend to make it up to them on the next one. But seriously...
Although I have worked long enough to have reversed that blemish upon my career, my conscious, thankfully is there to remind me that the future cannot engage in making the same mistakes as the past.
For any of us.
Therefore, I have to admit that I am finding it challenging that those of you who responded to the query for Shooters and Audio in Bali, that you would recommend your contacts, friends and people that you have built relationships with, to a project that only guarantees payment upon selling of the pilot- particularly a project that is travelling to a foreign country. Yes, I realize it is Bali and not Mogadishu, Although the lure of going to Bali would be tempting to anyone- myself included, however, the lack of salary immediately raises questions as to whether there is the ability to facilitate the financial burden of travel, housing and food for the crew, while in a foreign country, without a financial safety net should there be the need of
one.
Hey, I am not omniscient, and perhaps there is a knee jerk reaction on my part, however ask yourself is this worth risking your contacts for- and as equally as important, is this worth risking your reputation for?
Sincerely,
Co-Moderator,
"Nick"

From a composer who recently turned down a deferred gig, which had
"allegedly" no money for music, I offer this:
Today I visited Abbey Road to see the score for that film being
recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Take from that what you will.
---------------------------------------
I love how producers cry about 'no money' when we're in production, and then brag about how cheaply they made the film when it's in distribution. "We made this Feature Film for $15,000." Right. By begging and borrowing and using other people's equipment and skills and supplies and labor for free.
I have nothing against struggling filmmakers trying to make their shows and I've helped quite a few, but they've been honest about it. As long as we have people willing to work for free, producers will continue to take advantage of it.
Good group policy. Thanks.

For those that persist to post Non-Paid/Deferred Gigs in the paid section, please grow a brain before craigslist is nothing but a site to come look at all the pretty flagged ads. In case you didn't get it the first time,,,(paid) means monetary compensation even if it's the ridiculous low rates this site has been famous for. Gas,Meal,Copy,Credit are all non-monetary forms of compensation and should be listed in the non-paid section children. mmmk

it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
Compensation: Film does not pay. Look around.

RE: PLEASE STOP FLAGGING EVERYTHING THAT'S UNPAID
Date: 2009-10-21, 10:26PM PDT
While I get what you are saying, people look in the gig section to find PAYING work, however short term it may be. Internship ads belong on the job boards - but many of the people aren't really looking for interns - they are looking for free labor and post in the gig section so they don't have to pay for the ad either. And then they wonder why they don't get the quality of work they were hoping for...
And if it's not an "internship" and it's just plain ol' unpaid, in my book, that's "volunteer" work - and there is a section on CraigsList for that too.

Nearly every ad on here that is legit but unpaid keeps disappearing.
If you're annoyed by it, just click the "paid" button on your screen when you search. Some of us might be interested in them.
Thanks.

Remember the good ol days...
Date: 2009-10-16, 10:54AM PDT
...when the "Crew Gigs" section at least once in a while would actually PAY? When at least once in a while, it would be a significant project; a short film, a low budget feature shot on 35 or 16. Before all these digital cameras came on the market and completely saturated it with wannabe "filmmakers", so that every jerk with a credit card and a camera calls himself a director and wants to hire nothing but free crew on here? Im so sick of "Copy, credit, meal" provided I could punch someone. (I wish at the very least someone would change that cliche phrase; We NEVER get a copy, nobody cares about the worthless credit, and the meal probably stinks.)
Ive applied for probably a hundred jobs in the last months, jobs which I was OVERqualified for, many even freebees (trying to learn the Red camera), I maybe got 3 responses. And at least one I remember was reportedly a scam. I wonder most of the time, especially the "Production Assistant" listings, if they're even real, if the people that posted it are just lonely and wanna see mail in their inbox. (Like the Niborg's from "Glengary Glen Ross") Because no one ever gets back, at least not to me. I'm just completely fed up, this entire "crew listing" has become essentially useless, besides a pool of free labor for many "directors" and "producers" preying on film school kids.
Here's some advice to all you wannabe crew members just moving here: Unless your union brother in law is gonna get you in someplace? FIND ANOTHER LINE OF WORK. Because this has become virtually impossible.

Compensation: Ha ha. "Pay". In your dreams.

FILM MAKERS PAY ATTENTION
Date: 2009-10-10, 3:43PM PDT
It is no secret that we are in an economic crises that is severely effecting this job market. There are low life scum sucking scavengers out there that are taking advantage and feeding off this difficult time to price very skilled pros out of work. Because the technology has become so user friendly and cheap allows these low lives to believe that anybody can do it... therefore underpay or worse not want to pay. We all know, as pros, that this work takes skill, training, hard work, time and a financial investment. And when we do accept work at these deplorable offers, which I have been guilty of out of desperation, it always seems to turn into a nightmare. I'm sure most of you have experienced this crap! Well enough is enough!!! I know its tough to turn down any work at this time but with so many of us competing for the same gig they get us by the balls until they hear the price they want which is usually less than min wage. We, as freelancers are not unionized or protected in anyway. A precedent needs to be set! Please friends, I implore you, if only for one week DO NOT ACCEPT ANY JOBS FOR UNDER 200 per day, which is really less than the rental of some equipment. If we stick to a bottom line price, maybe just maybe, some of these cheap dirt bags will get the idea. They need us! But lets not allow them to exploit us anymore.

Free Music for Film?
Date: 2009-10-07, 11:39PM PDT
We spent lots and lots of money making a ton of episodes for a project, hiring all sorts of positions like directors and editors and directors of photography and costume designers and actors.
We feel really proud of our near-final product.
Now we need to put some music in, but we're not going to even think about paying anyone anything for it. We figure we might as well just give up on that, because music is free. Laaa!! See? Plus, if we can rape a few budding composers, we're sure to get the product we want, right? LOTS of films have been released that pay composers zero dollars, right? It's not a technical position that requires specialized knowledge of equipment or techniques, right? I've seen people playing the piano in old-time movie houses, like when people are tied on the train tracks and they play all those scary chords when that handlebar moustache dude in the cape is acting all suspicious. That's all there is to it, right?
So anyway, we'll be sure to include your name on our project and put you in the IMDB and give you a copy. Because a project that pays no money to its composer is sure to go places! You'll be a STAH!!
Seriously, though, no money. NOTHIN'.

The responses I got from a few composers who were genuinely interested in applying for the job.
Oy.
Shame on you. You deserve more than "nothing," buddy!

Volunteer vs. Intern etc
Date: 2009-10-02, 3:39PM PDT
I understand that budgets are tight.
I also disagree with people who say that if you don't have trucks of money you shouldn't make your film.
Based on that I also think that it's ok to ask someone to volunteer to work on your project for any number of reasons.
But do not confuse internships with volunteerism. Internships have strict guidelines and must follow minimum wage laws. They also must be worked out "in advance" with "accredited" institutions. One day on set is not an internship. Passing out flyers is not an internship.
If you want people to "donate" their time and resources ask for volunteers.
If you are offering below minimum wage realize you are asking people to invest in your project.
Internships are different.

Rid CL of the "internship!"
Date: 2009-09-29, 3:38PM PDT
I'd say 90% of us are crew people and creative types needing PAYING jobs, not college internships. It's almost shameful the amount of prod. companies that get on here to advertise for these positions when they should be focusing their efforts at COLLEGES!!! I'm still baffled at the fact that I've never truly seen a JOB post from any of these prod. companies...they always just need FREE interns.
Flag'em! Oh and for all the student productions, you should be looking at other students at your school! Make a friend and stop looking for pros and giving the run of the mill copy credit meal. We need to pay bills people....
Location: everywhere
Compensation: getting our industry back on its feet with paying work!

ALL CREW
Date: 2009-09-25, 10:43AM PDT
(it's hilarious that this got flagged, seeing as the only people who would flag this are the ones not paying!)
THE ECONOMY IS BAD. IT HAS AFFECTED US ALL. THIS IS NO EXCUSE NOT TO PAY YOUR CREW.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY, DON'T SHOOT IT. IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT.
LOOKING FOR FREE CAM OPERATORS AND AUDIO MIXERS WITH EQUIPMENT IS A JOKE. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT GEAR COSTS??????
PAS ARE NOT SLAVES. STOP TREATING THEM AS SUCH. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR STUDENTS, FIND THEM AT SCHOOL THIS IS A JOB POSTING BOARD NOT A VOLUNTEER POSTING BOARD.
EXPECTING PEOPLE TO WORK FOR FREE IS ILLEGAL. AND NO IT'S NOT AN INTERNSHIP. MAYBE YOU SHOULD LOOK UP THE DEFINITION OF INTERNSHIP IN THE LABOR LAWS.

CHECK THIS OUT...

Reply to: gigs-d2zpt-1368793122@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]
Seems like those who are trying to get outrageous demands for free are now posting in the "Jobs" section because they know they'll be flagged if they post these ads here. What sad is that to post in the "Jobs" section, it cost $25, yet they claim the project is low-budget and no-pay. Fucking horseshit. This goes to show that these people and those like them don't give a shit and are worst than leeches - they would rather pay to ask for free help than pay the help.. These are a few I've seen:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/tfr/1368541572.html - "Short Film Production/looking for 2 Cameras and Camera Operators (West Hollywood)"
Low Budget Production is looking for two cameras to shoot a "bromance" comedy short film. We need two of either the Sony EX-3/EX-1 or the Panasonic HVX-200 with batteries, GB cards and whichever camera camera accessories you can provide. If you have any lighting equipment, such as Kino Flos, Arri Light Kit, etc. that'd be great!
We have a fantastic comedy short written and are looking to film it for cheap. You will be working with a professional crew that has feature film experience. We are looking for two cameras/camera operators who want to be there and will appreciate the experience of working with talented, upcoming Hollywood A-listers. This short film will be seen by A-list Hollywood writers/directors. Opportunity for future work is very likely if you do your job well.

RE: Various Crew LA
Date: 2009-07-30, 1:17PM PDT
Didn't you know, people that apply for jobs here are enlightened beings from another dimension. We have no need for temporal things such as money, rent or other expenses. We exist just to serve you- our Creative Masters. Doing so brings us to a place of Zen and Nirvana. By accepting work for money we would be removing ourselves from our spiritual plane where we would be tainted by the imperfections of this world. The longer hours you make us work, and the worse the conditions means our souls will be cleansed all the more.

You guys are just venting and not solving the problem. You don't just post a rebuttal. Invite these idiots, one by one, to a "meeting." Invite all your friends whose living depends on the rates they get paid. Have a little talk with these "producers" who don't have money or common sense and make the talk very impactful!

What does Stipened and Deferred mean?

What it means is all the current economy rapist are out preying on poor souls who have to swallow any dignity they have to keep alive. I would suggest reporting all of these sweat shop antics to the Labor Board of CA. Just my 2 cents

Stipend and Defered, you idiot!!! (Hollywood)
Date: 2009-07-26, 3:14PM PDT
I can not believe that someone who has been working in tv for four years has not heard of the term deferred and I also can not believe that someone who has been working in TV for four years has to look on craigslist for a job (unless they are so awful at what they do that not even their closest friends will hire them on). Deffered means that there is no pay. Sometimes people make films and videos for fun and don't always have the budget to pay everyone, and most of the time when someone is not paying it means that they are not getting paid themselves. You are probably new to southern California and don't understand the business at all, which is fine, but get used to it. Everyone pays there dues in the beginning and if they are lucky enough, they make a career out of it.
-------------------------------------
Date: 2009-07-26, 3:38PM PDT
To be honest most indy filmmakers misuse the meaning of Stipend and Deferred... The real meanings are below.
To answer your question - A stipend is a form of monetary payment or salary, such as for an internship or apprenticeship. It is often distinct from a wage or a salary because it does not necessarily represent payment for work performed, instead it represents a payment that enables somebody to be exempt partly or wholly from waged or salaried employment in order to undertake a role that is normally unpaid, (e.g. a magistrate in England), or voluntary, or which cannot be measured in terms of a task (e.g. members of the clergy).
Stipends are usually lower than what would be expected as a permanent salary for similar work. This is because the stipend is complemented by other benefits such as accreditation, instruction, food and/ or accommodation. Universities usually refer to money paid to graduate students as a stipend, rather than as wages, to reflect complementary benefits.
AND
Deferred compensation is an arrangement in which a portion of an employee's income is paid out at a date after which that income is actually earned. Examples of deferred compensation include pensions, retirement plans, and stock options. The primary benefit of most deferred compensation is the deferral of tax to the date(s) at which the employee actually receives the income.

Dont be a slave - Internships must be paid
Date: 2009-07-12, 11:10AM PDT
I called the labor board to confirm. All interns must be paid at least minimum wage unless the employer has a signed agreement with an accredited college or university and the internship counts directly toward course credit. If anyone is offering an unpaid internship - flag them down. Legit internships get filled through schools. Dont let the cheap bastards take advantage of you.

Wow! How generous of you to "kick me 50 bucks" for my time. Now, how about you add a few hundred more on top of that for the use of my equipment, my talent, my skills, my experience, and my education in photography? Not to mention, you have NO idea how long a proper shoot actually takes. Depending on what/who is being shot, just setting up LIGHTING can take well over an hour, much less adding in getting the best composition.
what exactly makes you think that "kicking" a photographer 50 bucks to make your website look good is such a great offer?

PA Nation:

PA nation: Please STOP WORKING UNPAID GIGS for strangers. It upsets the job market and decreases the likelihood that deadbeat companies will ever offer paid PA work.
Truth is they don’t NEEDs PAs. PAs are a luxury. If a company cannot afford to pay their PAs they are un-professional or have priority issuses, an ego and likely will not provide good training or experience. In fact often these companies will teach you bad habits or the wrong way because the producers are not experienced enough to teach you anything but what not to do.
If you want experience don’t work these free gigs- produce your own stuff. You’ll learn so much more and become better than any of these jokers who won't roll up thier sleaves and have to rely on other people to do thier dirty work.

Producers and Crew
Date: 2009-05-22, 11:31PM PDT
Dear Producers and Crew,
It is time for all Non Union crew people to terminate working for meals, experience, and credit! If you read this message, "You Are The Resistance."
If your a low budget producer, PAY us at least min. wage, which is $8.00 an hour or $112.00 for a 12 hour work / 14 hour paid day, plus our equipment rates or box rentals. Some of us might even consider investing our equipment rentals and box rentals as an investment into your film for ownership and some control.
If you have something of value, like a red camera or gear and would like to trade services... I am even open to bartering.

John Connor is exactly right. Those of you working for free think that you are advancing your careers. In reality you're just washing out the job market and driving down wages. Essentially you are collectively ruining your chances to make a living in this industry.
Secondly, the mass of refuse that is able to be produced only through these means is flooding the oceans of content. There is so much media junk out there that, for the truly talented to be noticed will take a feat of ever growing, gigantic proportions. Yes people, you are building your own mountain (to climb).

PHOTOGRAPHERS Please don't work for free
Date: 2009-05-01, 10:11AM PDT
As a freelance photographer, I have found many creative and lucrative requests for photography on craigslist. There are way too many listings by businesses for photographers that are unwilling to pay for our services. Who would expect to shop at a store and expect to get merchandise for free? Should it be any different for anyone who provides a creative service?
Economic times are the worst we've seen in years and many of us who make a living from our craft(s) are hurting. Please don't take work away from us who are dedicated and depend on our craft to live. If you work for free you are taking away income from the rest of us who have invested heavily in our professions.
Remember, "Only slaves work for no pay."

On "Give Me Your Rate Or Else" Posts
Date: 2009-04-20, 9:50AM PDT
A recent post seeking a DP with equipment demanded that they submit a flat rate for the two weeks or their submission would be thrown out. This and other similar posts are a bit annoying and are truly difficult to respond to. In the low budget arena that is the Craigslist pool of work, it all comes down to a game of "Show me yours and I'll show you mine." If I knew you had a budget of a million dollars my rate would be X; if I knew you had $100,000 it would obviously be Y. It is virtually impossible to expect someone to submit a flat two week rate for a gig when you give them no baseline from which to base their bid upon. Why not just ask for reels and equipment lists first, then call those that seem the best fit for your gig and start the bidding process at that point?

STORY OF A CHEAP PRODUCER WANNABE
Date: 2009-04-11, 10:45AM PDT
A guy walks into an upscale restaurant and sits down at a table. The waiter comes over and takes his order. The customer orders the Lobster, Filet, and their best glass of wine. The customer eats his food quickly, obviously not used to such fine food. He greedily cleans his plate in record time. He calls the waiter over and hands him a five dollar bill and says, “Thanks for the food.” The customer then gets up and gets ready to leave. The waiter is very confused and tells the man that the meal he just consumed cost one hundred dollars.
The customer looks at the waiter and says, “Oh I know, but you see my budget was not big for this meal, and he only planned on spending five dollars.”
“So why did you order the most expensive thing on the menu?” asked the waiter.
“Because that’s what I wanted” the man replied
“I don’t think you understand sir” said the waiter, “The food itself cost more than five dollars, plus there is the matter of paying the wait staff, the chef, and overhead in the restaurant.”
The customer replied, “I don’t understand, you already own the building, so why charge me for that. The wait staff was already heading from the kitchen to the tables, so why should I pay for that. Just bring my food with everyone else’s. And the chef can’t be that expensive. You should just hire some bum off the street. It would be cheaper and just as good.”
Clearly the man has absolutely no concept of what it takes to run a business, so the waiter says, “Sir, if you don’t pay for the meal, I will have to call the police.”
Very confused, the customer says, “But that’s not how it should work. I just shot a pilot for a TV show, and it only cost me fifteen dollars. Isn’t this the same thing?”
Curious the waiter asked, “How is that possible?”
“Oh it’s easy”, the man said, “the videographer I hired owned his own equipment. That means I don’t have to pay for it.”
“Someone has to” said the waiter.
“Not me” said the customer
The waiter then called the cops and the man was arrested.
SOUND FAMILIAR, WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE. THEY WANT $50,000 TO $100,000 WORTH OF EQUIPMENT, PLUS YOUR TALENT THAT TOOK YEARS TO DEVELOP, AND WANT TO PAY YOU $100 A DAY.
BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COMMON DECENCY / MANNERS
Date: 2009-03-15, 7:47AM PDT
I am a freelancer with 10 years experience and I look at Craigslist everyday to pick up work if I can.
I always reply to posts that pertain to my services and send resume, reel link, rate, availability and whatever else they ask for.
You would think the least the poster could do is respond to everyone who sent them info and once they have filled the position to delete the ad.
They probably don't teach manners at the expensive film schools, just how to jerk people around!
But I guess I shouldn't expect too much since most the Craigslist ads are crappy gigs with low pay and no respect for your time or you as a human being.
What a shame!

"You would think the least the poster could do is respond to everyone who sent them info and once they have filled the position to delete the ad. "
And what exactly is that supposed to accomplish ? Seriously ? I'd love to understand what the thinking is here, I'm not getting it.
I see these same "please acknowledge my application" ads every week. What ?
This is not 1959 or even 1989, and people do not send hand typed formal query letters on watermarked linen letterhead by US Postal Service to be acknowledged by a similar letter from a secretary.
There's a massive army of overqualified competition for any film related position in Los Angeles, and if you have been doing this 10 years you surely have seen the whole thing change during that period of time.

As someone who has placed job ads here...I can tell you from experience... you can't respond to everyone, there is usually an overwhelming response to begin with. Not to mention that many responses are so rediculous they don't warrant a response in the first place. SO once you've placed an ad you will understand. It's not about rudeness, it's weeding through, picking the most suitable applicant and that's it!

RE: Decency and Manners (rudeville?)

Everyone is right that posters get hundreds of responses. This is what i don't get. I receive phone calls all the time and someone says, "hey this is brian, you responded to my craigs list posting? Are you still available to work?" I then reply, "on what? where? when? and for how much? what camera are we shooting on? who's the DP? who's directing? are these day or night shoots? who the hell am I talking to?"
Listen up producers/directors/whoever is posting these jobs... If you receive 200 responses. And you're calling ONE person back, then statistically I, as an average freelancer, have to apply to about 200 jobs for every call back I get. Now it's not quite that bad, but if I apply to 4-5 things every day and I assume it takes producers a few days to go through responses, then there's a possibility of you being from any one of about 20 jobs that I applied to. When you call to hire me, have some professionalism. Give me some info that was in the post so I know what job you're talking about. Give me more info that wasn't in your post. Tell me something about your shoot. Remember you're not doing a favor to freelances by offering them work. We're doing a favor to you by giving our excellent services for your (usually) low ball rate.
To the original poster, get over yourself. This is criagslist, not CAA. If you don't get a thanks but no thanks email just keep moving down the list.

If you are dumb enough to fall for this crap, you deserve to be taken advantage of.
The satisfaction of working for crew members who are descendants of Mother Teresa does not feed the kiddies, pay the rent or fills your tank.
Quit playing down your real motives.
If you don't have enough money to pay at least minimum wage, don't make a blipping movie.
Take your wonderful crew and charming personalities and get new careers!
It takes people to make films, it takes money to pay these people and these people don't live off the kindness of strangers.

Will everyone of you Hack-ass DPs running around with a camera just quit. If you're working for free then you suck and you will never make it. The only thing you accomplish is washing out the job market and driving down wages for the rest of us. And to all of you HACK-ASS Producer want-to-be's, obviously you have no taste or you wouldn't be hiring these no talent, camera having, quasi professionals to shoot your productions. NEWS FLASH, it will look like shit and you will never get into a festival. You get what you pay for. Please, drop off the face of the earth.

To Producers Looking For Crew Members
Date: 2009-02-21, 1:15AM PST
To all you folks looking for people to work for FREE/NO PAY/DEFERRED PAY
Wake the hell up and stop insulting us with these ads! Stop trying to get skilled labor for free. Slavery ended in 1865.
If you want a good, loyal team, PAY YOUR CREW. We don't need meals/copy/credit. We can't pay our rent with that. If you cannot afford to pay us, then you cannot afford to shoot your short/webisode/pilot/feature/music video (you fill in the blank). Gas is much too high to drive and work on these "jobs" for free, at least cover our gas. Raise the money and then hire your crew. Keep your stupid bagels and lunch. We don't want it. Pay us!
Signed,
A skilled crew member who refuses to work for nothing

Attention All Busters
Date: 2009-02-17, 8:14PM PST
For all the silly producer/director-half-ass-actors-who-really-wants-to-direct, want-to-be's pretending they have a real life gig to offer for a DVD and potato chips - you need to post at your local college bulletin board or hostel. You'd have more respect if you just posted on the "erotic" post and offered a blow job in return. The idea of a none paying job is an oxymoron with an emphasis on MORON. You losers need to post on the community boards where it's expected and understood. But most of all you need to stop wasting everyone's time here (gigs / creative / tv & film) and stop sucking up bandwidth on the web with your silly little weekend iMovie projects and save what little respect you lost by offering no money and a silly IMDB credit on a project that you can't even muster the conviction, courage or personal credit to finance. "Big named actors and emmy winning director" - really don't care - and if they had it like that what the hell are they doing on CL trying to farm out "experienced editors and dp's" who'll take all of there vast experience and give it to the anonymous retard who wants to make a short/music vid/feature for free? ... ""More projects to come after this one" - really? More free projects - no thanks? Really, if you can't afford the risk to pay for your "passion" project on the likely chance it fails, why should anyone else? Stop it morons! And you clowns don't know the difference between a Red camera and a pez dispenser so stop asking for it. Go get a job or go back to being a PA you silly busters.

Flag all the internship predators who are undercutting everyone and who think they can get a professional as an intern because the job market is so bad!
Don't cave people!
Flag them!
Search all the intern interns internship internships deferred pay crap and flag if they are the least bit predatory!
All sorts of businesses want their workforce to be all inters so they don't have to pay! This is ILLEGAL. Businesses who need repairs, web gurus, editors, you name it, stuff that has nothing to do with their business want true professionals! They are expected to "intern"! Hell I should put an add up for a car mechanic to fix my compression problem and tell him he is "interning" after being proficient enough to do the actual job I can't do!

Unit/Set photographers see here!
Date: 2009-02-11, 3:17PM PST
If you are a set photographer or an aspiring one, the first rule of thumb is to NEVER let any production take advantage of you, your time or your talent. I see all these ads day in and day out offering no pay or very low pay ($50-100 day, really, working at 7-11 pays that). This is not right for our industry.
Little hint to all... Set photographers should be earning $250-$350 per 8 hour day on Low Budget projects and $500 Day on mainstream stuff (Movies/network shows). This DOES NOT include your box rental which you should be charging between $75-$200 per day for your equipment depending upon the project and what you are using (in addition to your day rate).
The Economy may be bad, but our talents deserve every penny that we earn.
(This is just some good solid advice, not an employment offer)

DP / Steadicam Op / AC
Vacancy: DP / Steadicam Op / AC
Employer: WTF Productions
Location: Hollywood
Duration: Four 7 day weeks, starts tomorrow
Payment is on a lo/no/deferred basis.
DP needed who owns an HD or 35mm camera, grip truck with gas, lighting, crane and generator (also with gas). There is no pay and you must feed yourself daily, but if you want to stay home and just let us use your stuff, that'd be fine too. Must have 10 years experience, references, reel and major award for cinematography. You will not be involved in color timing. If we can shoot in your house too, that would also be great. IMDB credit only offered.
We are also desperate for a super experienced Steadicam operator with "A" list credits and top of the line gear that we won't pay for. This should include a preston system, super post and gyros for a one-shot scene lasting for 8-9 minutes where you will ascend 4 levels of stairs backward, duck through a window, get on a crane, step off and then run full sprint. No pay offered, but we have a PA who might rub your shoulders if he's not busy being a human sand bag. If you own a sand bag, please bring it. Some water and Fresca provided.
We will also need an experienced AC to be a one-man camera support team, pulling focus, slating, loading, setting up camera, marking actors and doing time cards - No pay, but you still need to do time cards. More importantly, you need to be technical experts at pulling focus on Steadicam, working with remote heads as well as picking up and returning the gear in your own car.

RE; looking for videographer
Date: 2009-01-26, 7:13PM PST
you know what is really funny!? When I go to Ralphs and grab groceries and then when I get up to the clerk, I just bust out my VIDEO REEL!!! They crack up!!
And what is with you all saying, "Great for a student" ...great how? You think because they are students they shouldn't be paid. I don't care if you're a student or veteran, you should be compensated no matter what.
And please leave out the arrogance in your ad. Filming you doing a parody is not a great thing for our reels, and in fact is something we do for a paycheck, not put on reels.
Paid work goes on reels because they are actually worthwhile projects!
* Location: funnyville

Hello everybody if you are experienced, and have lots of equipment then this AD is for you!!!
$75 bucks for a full day of work!!! That's $6 bucks per hour...or 2 dollars less than minimum wages...bring your talent, your experience, your reel, and of course, don't forget your equipment. Because they have none.
I guess if you are an "experienced DP" you better try your luck working for McDonalds...because at least THEY PAY MINIMUM WAGES!!!!

Here's an idea for the poster of the original preposterous post: Provide a link to YOUR reel to help US decide if we should GIVE you our valuable time, experience and the use of our equipment.
The sheer arrogance of these posts is amazing. But I guess it's a product of today's society, where every kid is told that THEY are more special than anyone else. Everyone thinks they deserve the world on a platter; the thought of "paying dues" is an alien concept...

LOL - Professional DP needed with Sony EX-1 and Letus 35mm - et all
Date: 2009-01-12, 2:32AM PST
Dear poster of "Professional DP needed with Sony EX-1 and Letus 35mm adapter (Los Angeles)" and ALL THE OTHER posters asking for owner-operators of similar consumer (and hack) tools,
After reading way to many posts from those like yourself I felt it time to offer a public service.
WHEN YOU POST THINGS LIKE THIS IT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE AN AMATEUR AND REAL PROFESSIONALS WILL MOST LIKELY NOT WANT TO WORK WITH YOU.
Instead you will attract wannabes, film students, and more than one person who bought a Red camera that they can't afford and are desperate to make a buck.
IT IS INSULTING TO THINK THAT A DP WILL BE HAPPY TO AUTOMATICALLY WORK WITH THE "HIGHLY EXPERIENCED" GAFFER YOU HAVE ATTACHED. WHO IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOUR PRODUCTION? THE WORST GAFFER I EVER WORKED WITH HAD BEEN A PROFESSIONAL 20-YEARS LONGER THAN THE DIRECTOR, IT DOESN'T MAKE THEM TALENTED OR NOT A TOTAL DICK.
REAL PROFESSIONAL DPS DON'T BUY CRAPPY TOOLS WITH THE INTENTION TO MAKE A LIVING FROM THEM. That means to Sony EX-anything, RED, JVC, CANON or cheap PANSONIC cameras.
DO YOU THINK YOU ARE MORE QUALIFIED THAN THE DP TO DECIDE WHAT EQUIPMENT TO USE FOR THIS PROJECT?
LEARN THIS LESSON - THE >> DUMBEST << HIRING DECISION ANY PRODUCER CAN MAKE IS HIRING A DP BASED ON WHAT EQUIPMENT HE OR SHE OWNS. WHY DO YOU THINK DPS HAVE REELS?

RE: Wardrobe/Stylist for SAG Feature Film (Los Angeles)
Date: 2009-01-05, 9:26PM PST
Does anyone else find it offensive that $1,000 flat (including kit fee) for an 18 day shoot translates to approximately $55.56/day? Even if the day was only ten hours long (which it never is for anyone in the costume department), that would mean $5.56/hour. What about prep and wrap days? Gas? It's obvious anyone expecting any decent work from someone for that rate has no idea what they are doing. Maybe it would be better for this director to stick to reality TV. This is show BUSINESS, not show hobby. If paying a decent rate isn't possible, then maybe it's time to rethink the project. Oh, and one last thing, "Wardrobe" is an old theater term, applicable to theater ONLY. The correct name for the department is Costume Department. The head of that department is the Costume Designer; and a stylist is a completely different job.

Date: 2009-01-05, 8:42PM PST
Wardrobe/Stylist needed for ultra low budget SAG film. THIS IS A RE-POST AS WE HAVE YET TO FILL THIS POSITION. IF YOU'VE PREVIOUSLY APPLIED PLEASE RE-APPLY.
THE FILM STARTS SHOOTING THIS UPCOMING SUNDAY for 18 DAYS THROUGH JAN 31st. REPLY ASAP AS WE NEED TO HIRE SOMEONE IN THE NEXT DAY OR SO.
The film is set in modern day los angeles, and is about the dynamics between dating friends.
There are the main characters all in their late 20's early 30's and the style of the film is natural, yet a little edgy and hip.
We don't have much money for rate or purchases, and a lot of the job will be helping the actors choose their wardrobes from clothes they already own, as well as some light shopping.
The film is the first feature of a director on a current network reality show.
The total rate for the whole shoot (18 days) is $1000.00. We understand this is extremely low, but the type of person we're looking for is an assistant who has some experience, but is looking to break out of the short film world and in to features.
Please respond asap with a link to your portfolio or website and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Thanks.
We're really looking for someone who is young and hungry.
* Location: Los Angeles
* Compensation: 1000 Flat for entire film and kit fee
